It's almost the end of 2019 and it's been a while since I've posted anything in this blog. Apologies for that. I figured I should at least write about a couple of local flavours now lost in 2019, and those flavours happened to be my favourites too...
Comfort Food No.1 |
What differentiates lost flavours from the limited special flavours that regularly come out of Japan (for example), is that it's kinda expected that you won't see those limited special flavours again (unless it's brought back by popular demand). What hurts with lost flavours is that you think it'll stay around forever, but because it happens to be a flavour that's not popular enough to justify keeping on the shelves, the flavour just disappears without warning.
Also, this is part 1 of Lost Flavours, the second part will cover the second flavour lost to mankind.
I'm not a fan of the regular chicken flavours of cup noodles, because there's just something about the "chicken" taste that feels too artificial for me. However, the Cream of Chicken flavour is an exception. I like cream of chicken soup, and having cup noodles in cream of chicken soup sounds really lovely.
It tastes lovely too!
I had the fortune of procuring some of these cup noodles before they disappeared for good. I searched at all the usual places that usually stock these noodles but could not find any. I finally found some at a Shojikiya outlet, and as I was paying for the noodles, the guy behind the counter told me that these flavours are not gonna be restocked, so I should buy a couple more, and so I did.
That was when I realised this flavour may disappear for good.
The Cream of Chicken flavour is basically cup noodles in cream of chicken soup. It's yummy. While the cut chicken cubes are not the most tender thing in the world, it (together with bits of veggies) gives the noodles a bit of texture. The diced carrots are also nice and sweet. I also love the fluffy eggs. They're a common staple in Nissin Cup Noodles. The combination of the soft, springy noodles with the creamy soup and the bits of toppings are just right for me.
I've checked Nissin Singapore's website for the Cup Noodle flavour (since they're the ones who produces Nissin cup noodles for Malaysia and Singapore), and indeed, that Cream of Chicken flavour is no more. There's that new Korean Army Stew flavour that I've yet to try, but I doubt it'll be a worthy replacement for the Cream of Chicken flavour.
...We'll see.
Goodbye, my friend. |
The Cream of Chicken flavour is a simple cup noodle and a delicious one. I'm sad to see it go. It's one of my go-to comfort foods whenever I wake up feeling shitty in the morning. At least I can somewhat reproduce it by putting cooked instant noodles in canned cream of chicken soup (but even that is a bit of a pain to make).
This next lost flavour may be a little trickier to reproduce.
I haven't had the chance to take a picture of the real thing before its disappearance, so here's an image of it I took from the internet. |
