Instant Noodle Review: Samyang Hot Chicken Flavor Ramen (bowl)

You may recognise these noodles in the spicy noodle challenges that appear on Youtube. These are the Samyang Hot Chicken Flavour Ramen, apparently the spiciest Korean instant noodles around. A note to make, this review is actually waaay overdue! (Even the pictures I have here are of the older packaging, lol!) At the time I first wanted to try it, these noodles were pretty hard to find. Now they can be found in almost every supermarket (in Selangor, at least), probably due the popularity it's gained from all those spicy noodle challenges. (They're also certified Halal!) Anyway, I went with the Cheese flavour for my first try (since I love cheese).

It's all in Korean, lol. Direct import from Korea?
The contents of the "bowl." Looks pretty straightforward.
Don't panic! The noodles are already cooked, lol.

These are "dry" noodles, meaning they're not meant to be eaten in soup (Wow, that's gonna make the spiciness intense!). You still have to cook the noodles though, so just pour boiled water into the bowl, cover it for 5 or so minutes (I like my noodles soft), and pour the water out from the little triangular holes serrated on the cover. Next, quickly pour in the chilli paste/oil, mix it, and then sprinkle the cheese seasoning before the noodles cool! (Or, you could let the noodles cool if you don't want your tongue to suffer.)

It's so red... I'm scared...

Ok, to be honest, at the time I had been craving something really spicy so I was hoping that it lives up to its super spiciness... and it delivered! Awwyiss, that was the spiciness I was looking for! And it was really tasty! The smell of the cheese was appetising, but the taste of the cheese was mostly overshadowed by the intensity of the chilli paste. Actually, the longer I ate, the more the spiciness was starting to get overbearing. It may be due to the fact that most of the chilli had sunk to the bottom of the bowl where I have to reach eventually. By the end of the meal, my nose was runny and tears were in my eyes. It was so damn spicy!!

Halfway through the meal, I added some furikake to give it more substance.

For a first time encounter with this noodle, it was an enjoyable experience. Now I know what to look for when I'm craving for something super spicy. Still, it was lacking in substance so I've experimented with adding other stuff to the noodles, which I'll probably cover in another blog post. For something like a spicy noodle challenge, I give this noodle a 9/10, but as a substantial meal I'll give it a 7.5/10 because you need something to go with that spiciness and there wasn't enough cheese powder! Just spiciness alone would make a boring meal. :D
