Kagami Mochi

A family member brought back a kagami mochi from Japan as a souvenir. I've never eaten kagami mochi before so it's gonna be an interesting experience.

Some people in my family thought it was a toy, lol

So, from what I've read online, kagami mochi is a mochi used as decorations leading up to the New Year. Then, at around the 11th of January, the kagami mochi is broken apart in an event called Kagami Biraki, and eaten to take in the good luck or something that the kagami mochi has absorbed. The broken pieces of the mochi would then be roasted and eaten in some vegetable/miso soup or red bean soup. Ok, time to open up the mochi!

Took out the outer packaging.
Seems to be telling you how to open it.
Hnngh, opening it was tough!
Alright, got it out!
Alright, time to break it!!

The breaking failed... The mochi was not dry enough to be brittle...

Agh, finally!!

Apparently, using a knife to cut the kagami mochi is bad luck but I can't be bothered at this point. =w=;
At least I tried to break it the traditional way with a hammer at first!

Got some soup ready!

Since I don't have any red bean soup, the closest I got was some instant Japanese clear soup! I put a few pieces of the mochi into the bowl together with the instant soup powder.

Before...
After!

I let the mochi sit in the soup for a while for it to soften. It tasted like... regular plain mochi. I mean, it is plain mochi, and it is chewy, like mochi. Well, it does give a bit of character to the soup. It's not bad, but I'm not a big fan of plain mochi in general.

Now I gotta figure out how to eat the rest of the mochi...

I guess that's one thing I can cross out in experiencing Japanese culture. I also later found out the hard way that mochi spoils when you leave it out for too long... Oops.

Will probably be eating this for the next few days...

Anyway, if I ever receive another kagami mochi as a souvenir, I'll probably experiment with other ways to eat it. I've read that you can deep fry them to turn them into rice crackers. Yum...
